ON-NET Windows 95/98 Internet Setup Guide

STEP 1 Install "Dial-Up Networking"

          1. Double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop screen.
          2. Look for an icon named Dial-Up Networking. (Picture1)
          3. If there is an icon for Dial-Up Networking skip to Step 2.
          4. If there is NOT an icon for Dial-Up Networking continue with Step 1.

Installing Dial-Up Networking requires you have either your Windows 95/98 disks or CDROM

          1. Double click the Control Panel icon. (Picture 1)
          2. Double click the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel
          3. Click on the Windows Setup tab.
          4. Under Components double click on Communications.
          5. Check the box for Dial-Up Networking. (Picture 2)

Click OK all the way out and choose NO when it asks you to restart. Leave the "Control Panel" open for Step 2

STEP 2 Install TCP/IP and Dial-Up Adapter


In the "Control Panel" double click on the "Network" icon.

"Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP are required"

          1. If Dial-Up Adapter andTCP/IP are in the network components window, close the network window and proceed to Step 3.
          2. If both do not appear in network window proceed with Step 2.


The next 7 lines are for adding both TCP/IP and Dial-Up Adapter respectively.

          1. Click on ADD. (Picture 3)
          2. Double click on Protocol or Adapter.
          3. Under Manufacturers click on Microsoft.
          4. On the right double click either TCP/IP or Dial-Up Adapter.
          5. The components will then appear under Components.
          6. Click on Ok closing Network properties.
          7. Now when windows asks to reboot click Yes.


STEP 3a Configure Dial-Up Networking

          1. Double click on the My Computer icon.
          2. Double click on the Dial-Up Networking icon.
          3. Double click on the Make New Connection icon. (Picture 4)
          4. When the Make New Connection Wizard asks for a connection name, type On-Net
          5. Make sure the correct modem is listed in the Select A Modem combo box. Click Next.
          6. Type 713-0689 in the Telephone Number text box. Click Next. Click Finish.

Dial-Up Networking will now show an On-Net icon. (Picture 5)

          1. Single click on the new icon with your Right mouse button.
          2. When the menu appears single click Properties.

This exposes an important difference between Windows 95/98 versions.

Version 0 or A w/o DUN Upgrade

Version B with DUN Upgrade

  • Click the Server Types button. (A new window will appear)
  • Check only the box labeled TCP/IP.
  • Remove all other check marks.
  • Click TCP/IP SETTINGS. (A new window will appear)
  • Click the Specify Name Server Address radio button and enter:
  • Primary DNS= 204.117.190.2
  • Secondary DNS= 204.117.214.10

  • Click OK three times to finish.

 

  • Click the Server Types tab.
  • Check only the box labeled TCP/IP.
  • Remove all other check marks.
  • Click TCP/IP SETTINGS. (A new window will appear)
  • Click the Specify Name Server Address radio button and enter:
  • Primary DNS= 204.117.190.2
  • Secondary DNS= 204.117.214.10

  • Click OK to Finish.

STEP 3b Creating a Shortcut to On-Net on your Desktop

          1. Open Dial-Up Networking. (Picture 8)
          2. Right click on your on-net icon, a menu will appear, then click on create shortcut. (Picture 9)
          3. A new message will appear (Picture 10) click Yes
          4. You now have a shortcut to On-Net on your desktop. (Picture 11)

STEP 4 Getting Online

          1. Double click on the desktop shortcut to on-net. (Picture 11)
          2. Enter your username and password in the correct fields. (Picture 12)
          3. Click the Connect button.
          4. If connection is successful you will see a Connected window. (Picture 13)
          5. If connection is unsuccessful, you will receive an error after about 30 seconds. Make sure that you have entered your password correctly.
